| Veterans, a General Statement |

I am very proud of our men and women in the Armed Services. I regard the benefits our nation has provided veterans as simple gratitude -- the least we could do for those who have defended our freedom at the risk of their own lives.
Disabled Veteran's Tax
I am a sponsor of the Retired Pay Restoration Act of 2003, H.R.303, which is probably the highest priority now of veterans' groups. The bill would allow disabled veterans to receive both their retirement benefits and their disability benefits. The law now requires a dollar-for-dollar reduction of retirement benefits for any disability benefits to which a veteran is entitled. The House leadership opposes the bill because they think it is too expensive, that we cannot afford to allow disabled veterans all the benefits that they have earned.
The House leadership has not allowed the bill to be debated or considered for a vote. I have signed a petition that would require the bill to come before the House for a vote. There are now 204 signatures on the petition, just 15 short of what is needed under the House's rules to force a vote.
Health Benefits for Veterans
I am a cosponsor of legislation to allow veterans and their families to enroll in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program as an alternative to TRICARE. I also am a cosponsor of legislation to increase the minimum Survivor Benefits Plan annuity for surviving spouses who are age 62 or older to provide for a one year open enrollment period under that plan. I have advocated from the floor of the House and in letters to the Speaker and to the minority leader for more funding for veterans' health care. Source: Candidate Website (10/04/2008) |
